FA-2 Tool-2 TaRL Testing Guidelines 2026-27
Telugu, Mathematics and English testing process, level criteria and common instructions.
Key Instruction
The assessment should be conducted individually in a friendly, relaxed and stress-free environment. Only the highest level achieved by the child should be recorded.
A. TaRL Telugu Testing Process
The TaRL baseline assessment is integrated into the FA-2 examinations. The Assessment Booklet/Tool-2 includes the relevant testing components. The writing component, where applicable, is administered to the child, but its marks are not entered in the OMR sheet.
TaRL Telugu Levels

- Start from Paragraph Level: Begin at Level 3 and ask the child to read the paragraph.
- Paragraph Level: Fluent reading moves to Story Level; more than 3 errors, word-by-word reading or lack of fluency moves down to Word Level.
- Word Level: Ask the child to read any 5 of 10 words. At least 4 out of 5 correct = Word Level.
- Letter Level: Ask the child to read any 5 of 10 letters. At least 4 out of 5 correct = Letter Level; otherwise Beginner Level.
- Story Level: Fluent story reading progresses to Comprehension Level; otherwise record Paragraph Level.
- Comprehension Level: Both prescribed questions must be answered correctly for Level 5.
Key Rule: Story reading alone is not sufficient for Level 5.
B. TaRL Mathematics Testing Process
Mathematics testing includes Number Operations and Word Problems. Number recognition is used for teacher awareness and is recorded in the School Learning Progress Sheet.
TaRL Mathematics Levels

- Test in this order: Addition → Subtraction → Multiplication → Division.
- At each operation, the child must solve 2 out of 2 correctly to proceed.
- Both prescribed division problems must be correct to proceed to Word Problems.
- Both prescribed Word Problems must be correct to record Level 5.
Key Rule: One correct word problem is not sufficient for Level 5.
C. TaRL English Testing Process
The English assessment follows the same level structure and progression logic as Telugu reading.

- Begin at Paragraph Level (Level 3).
- At Word Level, at least 4 out of 5 words must be read correctly.
- At Letter Level, at least 4 out of 5 letters must be read correctly.
- Both prescribed comprehension questions must be answered correctly for Level 5.
D. Common Instructions
- Record only the highest level successfully achieved by the child.
- Conduct the assessment individually in a friendly, encouraging and stress-free environment.
- Show only the relevant section of the Testing Tool by folding the sheet as required.
- At Paragraph/Story level, repeated mistakes on the same word count as one error only.
- Use the prescribed sample rotation for the assessment cycle.
- Record the highest achieved level in the OMR Sheet (Tool-2) and the School Learning Progress Sheet, as applicable.
